Baby Loss Awareness Week 2024

Today is the final day of the 22nd Baby Loss Awareness Week. All over the UK, people have been taking part in ribbon runs, creating ribbon displays and having events which help to raise awareness. You may have seen national landmarks lit up in pink and blue this week in support of this week which is organised by Baby Loss Awareness Alliance – a collection of baby loss charities such as Sands, Tommy’s and the Miscarriage Association to name just a few.

Pregnancy and baby loss happens in many ways and is more common than people may realise. This graphic from Sands shows the types of loss people can experience:

Tonight, Baby Loss Awareness Week closes with the Wave of Light at 7pm. Around the globe, at 7pm local time, people light a candle to create a wave of light around the world to remember all the babies who are not with us. Anyone can join in with this whether you have been directly impacted by pregnancy or baby loss or know someone who has.

The loss of a baby can be life changing and it is important to take the time you need to come to terms with your new normal.  Turning to others for support can be very helpful whether this be from friends or family members, peer support groups or 1:1 professional counselling support.

At NE1 Counselling CIC, we are passionate about supporting people through this devastating loss. Louise works as a befriender for Newcastle Sands and has long been affiliated the charity Sands (the stillbirth and neonatal death society) following the stillbirth of her son in 2008. We have undertaken specialist training and have worked with clients who have come to us for support following loss.

If you are struggling and need support, please get in touch to talk about how we can help. We offer a number of low cost 1:1 counselling spaces as we believe cost should not be a barrier to getting the help you need.
